Michael Smith

Mike’s career began in IT, where he specialised in data and telephone systems. In 2009, he transitioned to the electrical industry, qualifying as an electrician and establishing his own business in South Africa. Over the years, Mike gained extensive experience managing projects and delivering high-quality electrical solutions to a diverse range of clients.

After relocating to Australia in 2015, Mike successfully converted his trade qualifications and earned his electrical contractor’s license in 2018. That same year, he and Charleen launched SML Electrical, combining their talents to build a trusted and reliable family-run business.

As a licensed electrical contractor and a qualified electrician, Mike brings technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to excellence to every project.

Charleen Smith

Charleen’s journey into the electrical industry is inherited, with both her father and grandfather working as electricians. After finishing school, she joined the family’s lighting and electrical business, where she developed a strong foundation in customer service and technical expertise.

After the birth of her first child, Charleen transitioned to a role as a buyer and estimator for a prominent electrical company.

She excelled in this role for six years before joining forces with Mike to co-manage their own electrical business in South Africa. Bringing with her a keen insight for the electrical planning and customer relationship that is invaluable in understanding client needs and larger projects.

In 2015, Charleen and her family moved to Australia, where she took a two-year break to focus on raising their children. In 2018, she co-founded SML Electrical alongside Mike and decided to formalise her passion for the trade by becoming an apprentice. Charleen achieved her full electrician qualification in early 2022 and continues to bring her organizational skills, dedication, and hands-on expertise to the business.
